Horticultural Sciences provides students with the knowledge and skills needed for a career in the production and management of plants and soils for food, fiber, forage, oil, recreation, landscaping and the enhancement of the human environment. Graduates have the technical and scientific skills as well as the communication, computational, leadership, and interpersonal capabilities necessary to function effectively as professionals. Students will customize their courses to pursue the path that best fits their interests and career paths. Our program offers two areas of emphasis:. Register for classes. A program that focuses on the general production and management of cultivated plants, shrubs, flowers, foliage, trees, groundcovers, and related plant materials; the management of technical and business operations connected with horticultural services; and the basic scientific principles needed to understand plants and their management and care. These curricula are designed to prepare individuals for various careers in horticulture. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticultural principles and practices are included in the program of study. Horticultural Technology Management
The Environmental Horticulture program at City College offers a broad curriculum in a community-based program. The program maintains strong links with employers many of whom are CCSF graduates in both the private and public sectors. Professional organizations such as the California Landscape Contractors Association, the California Association of Nurserymen and the San Francisco Professional Gardeners Association recognize the Environmental Horticultural program and provide scholarship assistance for outstanding students. Environmental Horticulture provides job notices placement for its students, as well as referral to superlative internships such as those at Strybing Arboretum and Filoli Estate. The program offers excellent facilities, and a staff committed to student success.
Curriculum Guide: Master of Science in Horticulture
Supporting Unit: Tehama County. Yet, nearly half of all California 8th graders test below their grade level in science abilities. The current emphasis on reading and math is squeezing science from the classroom curriculum. In , Jeanne George, 4-H Youth Development Advisor, taught 30 5th and 6th grade students from Bidwell Elementary School in Red Bluff about watersheds, different types of maps and uses, how to use a compass, and how to measure the perimeter and depth of a pond. Using the data they collected, the students wrote and distributed a flyer about the pond with a topographical map. The Pond Mapping curriculum is in the process of further review and pilot-testing nationwide.

Plants play many roles in human environments, from beautifying indoor and outdoor areas to controlling erosion, reducing energy and water consumption, and revegetating and restoring destroyed landscapes. Students in the environmental horticulture and urban forestry major learn the interrelationships among complex managed landscape ecosystems, including plants, people, animals, soil, water, air and microorganisms. As an environmental horticulture and urban forestry major, you have many field study options.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses within the program.
The Horticultural Technology Management program is designed to produce versatile graduates prepared for a wide range of entry-level and middle management positions in the extensive green industry on Long Island and beyond. The horticultural green industry is a diverse conglomerate of growers, retailers, designers, installers, and maintenance personnel serving public and private gardens, homeowners, golf courses, parks and recreational facilities. Through a selection of required and elective courses in the concentration, students will become progressively more specialized and advanced in their chosen area of interest.
