How old until tamarind tree makes fruit?

I have a tree that I got from a reputable nursery in Ohio. The owner is no longer in business and I was wondering when the tamarind tree will have fruit. I bought it at 5-8 years old, but I think it's closer to 20. Is there any way to find out? Thanks.

I just saw this post. I bought a tamarind tree 10 years ago. I bought it from a very reputable nursery. They said when it was about 20 years old it started producing fruit. I am not sure how old this tree is. The leaves are still green, but the tips look like they are about to turn brown. I am just guessing.

I have a tamarind tree (3 years old?) that has never produced anything. I live in Miami, FL so it is likely I did something wrong. I did get some small fruits from the tree a year or two ago and one can eat them, but they are nothing more than a dry skin on the inside of the fruit.

It is important to remember that a tamarind tree does NOT produce fruit unless it is first given several years of "tasting" the fruit so that it will accept it. It is the practice of the fruit producers in India to do this, as well as the producers of the various spices that are used in our food and beverages.

The tamarind tree is very useful. In the Philippines it is used to make tamarind juice which is a very popular beverage and condiment. But it will need years and years of nurturing and attention before it will yield something. It is the same as the process of nurturing or growing grapes or olives, not to be rushed.

In case of tamarind tree, I am getting mixed signals. There are a lot of posts on the subject. Many are not encouraging, many are positive. Help my asseblief. I have grown tamarind for the last 3 years. Since then, it does not even have any fruits.

The tamarind tree must be planted from the seed so it can be expected to produce fruits. It cannot be forced into producing any other crop. The fruit should be used as soon as it is mature. Once it is ripe, it is a very sour fruit, so even young fruit must be left on the tree for about a week before they are eaten. It will not grow very well from seeds because of the lack of salt in the soil.

The fruit shrinks and loses much of its juice to the ground in a matter of days if it is harvested when green and soft. To achieve maximum size and quantity of juice, the fruit must be left on the tree for about 8 to 12 weeks before it is picked. However, even the ripe fruit will not produce a lot of juice if the seeds are picked before they have been allowed to ripen.

Please see an image from the University of New England on how to take cuttings from tamarinds (The fruit grows on the branches and it is difficult to get it from the main trunk).

Wat dink jy? Is it too much to expect from a small fruit tree? Do you think it is a waste of my time to continue trying?

The most common tree that is found in many parts of India is the tamarind tree. It is mostly native to the tropical parts of India and it is popular as a home plant. The tree is said to be a symbol of good luck in many parts of India.

1. Snoei
